How to Suture: VIDEO

How to suture

I made a video describing how to suture.  This is valuable as a dentist and will save time if you get good at it.  I am open to suggestions as I do not consider myself a master of the technique.  There are probably 20 ways to suture and I present only a few that I have used in dental school, mostly in our oral surgery department after an envelope flap +/- a releasing incision.

The key is to practice.  I have a suture board (or a sturdy clip as seen in the video) that I will use to practice my suturing skills on those rainy days.

Ben, this is very impressive. You are, as you know, improving, perfecting, your skill by sharing and teaching it. This technology is amazing. Your video, in my humble opinion, couldn’t be better. Very relaxed and easily followed. Anyone, of course, could replay the procedure any number of times to learn what you’re demonstrating. Very good. Keep up the great work. G/pa Reed.

    Hi Ben,

Thanks for the video. Well done. First time watching the video, I find the second part of the video more helpful than the first because I did not think of breaking down the technique like you did. I was confused by the hand manipulations.

Thankd Grandpa and Jenny. Grandpa, the video and post were set to publish at 1:00am, I had already been asleep for a few hours.
    ;)
Jenny, watch the video a few times with a rope in front of you and practice along…it takes some practice.

do you use a continuous technique or do you simply knot every suture?? good explanation though!

Most often in the mouth I use an interrupted suture. If you are extracting 1-3 teeth in a single area then a few interrupted sutures work fine.
I have extracted 8-12 teeth in a single arch and most of these were retained roots so a crestal incision was made spanning the alveolar ridge. A continuous suture can then be made in this area.
Another suture I have used in a single tooth extraction socket is a figure eight.
