How does everyone manage patients? I am trying to decide between a PDA, a PDA/phone combo, or just going the paper route and using a standard daily planner…

I just use paper and pen. Make sure you don't lose anything if you go this route. Many people in my class have a PDA or smart phone with storage on there as well as bluetooth backup to thier computer. It costs a lot though, like maybe 100-400 for a phone and a phone plan.

A PDA can do the same. Again, I am cheap and use the paper route.

I decided to by a monthly/weekly planner and was happy with my choice. I bought one from staples that had semi hard plastic covers. The whole thing is bound with some good metal rings and the metel rings are protected on the outside by some plether that is also sewn to the plastic covers. It is a staples brand notebook. It cost about $16.00 and goes for a year.

Outline: full page spread of each month with each week of the months ined out in between. It has a pocket in the back and it was the ONLY planner at staples with tabs that can be placed throughout and a bookmark that can also be switched around. There is enough room to write everywhere and a section in the back for notes.

The only thing that sucked was that the planner doesn't start until July 2008. Since we started in clinic in June 2008 I was missing a month. I solved the problem by printing off a calender that would fit the pages and glued it into the first couple of pages to cover the addresses and birthday sections of the planner that I wouldn't use.

So far so good. I can see all my details and keep all my patient phone numbers handy.

Other people in my class have gone different routes:

1) PDA: palm based or windows based or iTouch based. If I was going to get one of these I would get the iTouch, just because I use a mac and they would be more compatible. I also like the way they navigate. I am not a die hard mac or PC afficiondo (sp?), so my second buy would be a windows based - like an HP. Some things to consider: Make sure the PDA can access your wireless school network and download the latest drug info from epocrates (i think it is called) the online drug reference that helps you look up obscure drugs and find out if your patient is taking a blood thinnner or is on a beta blocker, etc. Teachers like to know that you know what they are on.

2) Smart phone: things like the iPhone or the TREO windows based or palm based. I hate anything palm based and in this category I would most likely get the TREO. I like it better, don't ask why. Go to mobiletechreview.com to find out which one you like. I would get one of these over a PDA anyday. simply because I would rather carry one thing around vs. 2 (pda and cell phone).

3) Nothing. some classmates don't have anything yet. no worries, there is plenty of time.
